The first World Cup was held in Montevideo with 13 nations competing. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final in front of 68,000 fans. Uruguay remain the only nation to win the inaugural edition on home soil.



**1934 — Italy (Host: Italy)**



Benito Mussolini used the tournament as political propaganda, but Italy delivered on the pitch. Angelo Schiavio scored the winner in extra time as Italy defeated Czechoslovakia 2-1 under coach Vittorio Pozzo — the only man to win the World Cup twice as a manager.



**1938 — Italy (Host: France)**



Italy became the first team to successfully defend the World Cup title, defeating Hungary 4-2 in Paris. Gino Colaussi scored twice. Italy remain the only back-to-back World Cup champions in history.



**1950 — Uruguay (Host: Brazil)**



The most shocking result in World Cup history. Uruguay defeated host nation Brazil 2-1 at the Maracanã in front of 173,850 fans — the largest crowd ever to attend a football match. Alcides Ghiggia scored the winner in the 79th minute. The event became known in Brazil as the Maracanazo — a national tragedy that scarred a generation.



**1954 — West Germany (Host: Switzerland)**



The Miracle of Bern. West Germany defeated the seemingly invincible Hungary 3-2 in the final despite Hungary being undefeated for four years. Helmut Rahn scored the winner six minutes from time in one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.



**1958 — Brazil (Host: Sweden)**



A 17-year-old named Pelé announced himself to the world. Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2 in Stockholm, with Pelé scoring twice. Brazil changed football tactics forever with their 4-2-4 formation.



**1962 — Brazil (Host: Chile)**



Brazil defended their title despite Pelé suffering an injury in the second game. Garrincha stepped up to win the Golden Ball and carry Brazil to back-to-back titles, defeating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final.



**1966 — England (Host: England)**



England's only World Cup triumph. Geoff Hurst became the only player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final as England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley. His controversial second goal remains disputed 60 years later. England have not returned to a World Cup final since.



**1970 — Brazil (Host: Mexico)**



Widely considered the greatest World Cup and greatest team in football history. Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 in the final, with Jairzinho scoring in every match — the only player ever to achieve this feat. Brazil won the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently having claimed it three times.



**1974 — West Germany (Host: West Germany)**



Johan Cruyff's Total Football Netherlands went ahead before a German player had touched the ball — then lost. Gerd Müller scored the winner as West Germany defeated Netherlands 2-1 in Munich.



**1978 — Argentina (Host: Argentina)**



Argentina's first World Cup title on home soil, led by Mario Kempes who scored twice in the final. Argentina defeated Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in Buenos Aires. Kempes finished as Golden Boot winner with six goals.



**1982 — Italy (Host: Spain)**



Paolo Rossi returned from a two-year match-fixing ban to score six goals in three matches — a hat-trick against Brazil, two against Poland, two in the final. Italy defeated West Germany 3-1. Rossi won the Golden Boot, Golden Ball and World Cup in the same tournament — an achievement never replicated.



**1986 — Argentina (Host: Mexico)**



The Hand of God and the Goal of the Century in the same match. Diego Maradona produced the most memorable individual World Cup performance in history against England in the quarterfinals. Argentina defeated West Germany 3-2 in the final.



**1990 — West Germany (Host: Italy)**



West Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 with an 85th-minute penalty by Andreas Brehme — the first World Cup final to end without a goal in open play. Lothar Matthäus won the Golden Ball.



**1994 — Brazil (Host: United States)**



Brazil's fourth World Cup title, won in Los Angeles on penalties against Italy — the first World Cup final decided by a shootout. Roberto Baggio sent the decisive penalty over the crossbar in one of sport's most haunting images. Brazil became the first four-time World Cup champion.



**1998 — France (Host: France)**



Zinedine Zidane scored twice with headers as host nation France defeated Brazil 3-0 in the final at the Stade de France. France's multicultural squad — players born across Africa, the Caribbean and South America — united a nation behind a team that represented modern France.



**2002 — Brazil (Host: South Korea/Japan)**



Ronaldo's redemption. Four years after his mysterious collapse before the 1998 final, Ronaldo scored both goals as Brazil defeated Germany 2-0 in Yokohama. He finished as Golden Boot winner with eight goals — breaking the World Cup finals scoring record. Brazil became the only five-time World Cup champion.



**2006 — Italy (Host: Germany)**



Italy defeated France on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Zinedine Zidane was sent off in extra time for headbutting Marco Materazzi in his final professional match. Fabio Grosso scored the decisive penalty. Italy won their fourth World Cup title.



**2010 — Spain (Host: South Africa)**



Spain became the first European team to win a World Cup held outside Europe. Andrés Iniesta scored the only goal in extra time of the final against Netherlands. Spain's tiki-taka style under Vicente del Bosque produced the most technically precise football of any World Cup winner.



**2014 — Germany (Host: Brazil)**



The Mineirazo. Germany humiliated host nation Brazil 7-1 in the semifinal — the most shocking result in World Cup history. Mario Götze scored with a sublime chest and volley in the 113th minute to give Germany their fourth title.



**2018 — France (Host: Russia)**



Kylian Mbappé became the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final as France defeated Croatia 4-2. Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann also scored. Mbappé won the Best Young Player award at age 19.



**2022 — Argentina (Host: Qatar)**



The greatest World Cup final in history. Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw. Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick for France. Lionel Messi scored twice and won the Golden Ball. Argentina's victory ended a 36-year wait for their third title.



**2026 — Spain vs Argentina (Host: USA, Canada, Mexico)**



The 2026 final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey pits defending champions Argentina against Spain. It is Lionel Messi's final World Cup at age 39, facing 19-year-old Lamine Yamal — who as a baby appeared in a viral charity photo with a young Messi.
