Hull KR Stuns Hull FC 34-20 From 12 Points Down in Derby

Key Points

  • Hull FC led 12-0 after eight minutes but Hull KR leveled by halftime with tries from Tom Amone and Arthur Mourgue.
  • Joe Burgess scored an intercept try with 12 minutes remaining, racing nearly 80 metres to seal the comeback.
  • The victory moves defending Super League champions Hull KR back into playoff positions after the 34-20 win on Thursday.

Mourgue added a penalty to extend the lead further. Jake Arthur's late try for Hull FC proved academic as Jordan Dezaria forced his way over for Hull KR's fifth try in the final stages.

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters told Sky Sports the performance demonstrated character despite the early adversity. "That was a relieving victory but naturally, after the start that could have got ugly, but they showed a lot of fight," Peters said. "12-12 at half-time, yeah it wasn't perfect but I wanted to see some fight from the group and they certainly showed that."

Hull FC had entered the derby on an eight-match losing streak against their rivals. The Black and Whites' coach acknowledged the turning point came in the closing stages. "The Burgess try was a back-breaker," he stated. "Got to give credit to Hull KR, they were the better team."

The comeback demonstrates a pattern emerging in recent Super League play: teams trailing at halftime increasingly mounting second-half comebacks through sustained defensive pressure and tactical adjustments. Hull KR's ability to suffocate Hull FC's field position in the second half, combined with a decisive intercept try at a crucial moment, overcame an opposition side that had controlled large portions of the opening 40 minutes.
