AegisAI Raises $36M to Combat AI-Powered Email Attacks

Key Points

  • AegisAI raised $36 million in Series A funding led by Battery Ventures to detect AI-crafted spear phishing emails.
  • Co-founders Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo previously developed safe browsing technology and reCAPTCHA at Google.
  • The startup's AI agents analyze emails for anomalies that traditional rule-based security systems miss, including malicious PDFs with built-in passwords.

Less than a year after launch, AegisAI has been adopted by dozens of customers, including crypto payments company Mesh, AI startup LangChain, and privacy compliance platform Lokker. Dharmesh Thakker, general partner at Battery Ventures, stated that "the bad guys are using email to attack us using AI at a much faster pace than we can keep up with."

AegisAI competes in a crowded market alongside Lightspeed-backed Ocean and other newer entrants attempting to displace established vendors like Proofpoint and Mimecast. However, Thakker believes AegisAI's leadership advantage—derived from the co-founders' experience securing Gmail, the world's most popular email system—positions the startup as a frontrunner in the emerging agentic security space.

While AegisAI is currently focused on email defense, Khormaee indicated the company plans to expand into other security domains such as data protection. He emphasized that "the core idea of building customized, highly advanced agents that can do investigations is going to [determine] who becomes the next dominant security company." The competitive pressure in email security mirrors patterns in other software security markets, where AI-native approaches have consistently displaced legacy rule-based systems over five-year periods.

What This Means

AegisAI's expansion beyond email into data security will likely intensify competition with broader cybersecurity platforms. Given the $49 million total capital and stated customer adoption rate, the startup could reach profitability within 18-24 months if it captures 5-10% market share of enterprises currently using Proofpoint or Mimecast.
