Robinhood Chain Launches Ethereum Layer-2 Network for Tokenized Stocks

Robinhood Chain Launches Ethereum Layer-2 Network for Tokenized Stocks

Key Points

  • Robinhood Chain launched on mainnet July 1, 2026, as an Ethereum layer-2 network built using Arbitrum Dedicated Blockchains technology.
  • The network handles tokenized real-world assets including stocks and ETFs, with Stock Tokens providing exposure but not legal ownership or voting rights.
  • Stock Tokens are not available to U.S. users and use ETH as the native gas token, with support for existing Ethereum development tools.

"Decentralized finance unlocks possibilities beyond what traditional finance can offer, but historically, it has required technical expertise to navigate," Johann Kerbrat, SVP and general manager of crypto and international at Robinhood, said in a statement. "We're bringing the best of traditional finance and DeFi together, and in doing so, expanding financial ownership to every corner of the globe."

Stock Tokens and Real-World Asset Integration

Robinhood's Stock Tokens are blockchain-based assets that provide exposure to real-world assets (RWAs) outside the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Because they exist on-chain, Stock Tokens can interact with trading platforms, lending protocols, and other smart contract-based financial tools. However, Stock Tokens do not constitute legal ownership of underlying assets and do not grant shareholder voting rights.

Stock Tokens carry significant geographic restrictions. Robinhood explicitly prohibits their offering or sale in the United States, stating: "Stock Tokens are not registered under U.S. securities laws and may not be offered, sold, or delivered, directly or indirectly, in the United States or to, or for the account or benefit of, U.S. persons." Additional jurisdictional limitations apply in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

Robinhood Chain integrates with established DeFi infrastructure providers. Decentralized exchanges available on the network include Uniswap, which allows users to trade blockchain assets through smart contracts rather than traditional intermediaries. Many DEXs employ automated market makers (AMMs) that rely on asset pools instead of conventional order books. Lending protocols on the network enable users to supply assets through smart contracts for borrowing.

The network uses a first-come, first-served sequencing model, meaning transactions are processed based on arrival time rather than allowing users to pay higher fees for priority placement. This approach differs from many other blockchain networks where transaction fees can determine ordering priority.

Robinhood's entry into layer-2 blockchain infrastructure follows a broader trend of traditional finance platforms exploring blockchain-based tokenization. The network's focus on making decentralized finance more accessible to non-technical users represents an effort to bridge traditional financial markets with cryptocurrency infrastructure.

If you trade stocks or ETFs outside the U.S., Robinhood Chain could provide faster and cheaper access to tokenized versions of these assets through DeFi protocols. If you develop financial applications, this layer-2 network offers a platform to build tokenized asset services with Ethereum's security without main-chain transaction costs.

Market Outlook

Robinhood Chain will likely attract developers building tokenized asset applications, particularly in non-U.S. markets where Stock Tokens are permitted. Success depends on adoption by decentralized exchanges and lending protocols, regulatory clarity around tokenized securities, and competitive positioning against other Ethereum layer-2 networks. Growth may accelerate if major financial institutions issue tokenized products on the chain.
