Polymarket launches U.S. marketing blitz after 4-year regulatory ban

Key Points

  • NEW YORK — Polymarket is launching a major U.S. marketing campaign to rebuild trust and legitimacy after years of legal scrutiny and a four-year ban from serving American customers.
  • The prediction market platform announced a coordinated strategy involving social media influencers, partnerships with Major League Baseball, and deals with news outlets including CNBC and CNN, according to reporting from the Associated Press on Wednesday. Dan Lee, Polymarket's head of U.S. operations, told AP the company is taking deliberate steps to broaden acceptance and demonstrate trustworthiness following a troubled history with U.S. regulators.
  • "I think having the international business being the bulk of the volume, it often sort of masks the progress we are making here in the U.S. to broaden Polymarket's acceptance," Lee said in an interview.

Polymarket's social media presence has grown substantially, with its X account now boasting 1.7 million followers and posting about current events multiple times daily. By comparison, rival platform Kalshi, which has operated under Commodity Futures Trading Commission supervision since 2020, has 431,400 followers on the same platform.

A Troubled Past Driving the Rehabilitation Effort

The company's comeback effort follows a contentious history with U.S. authorities. Four years ago, Polymarket agreed to cease serving U.S. customers as part of a $1.4 million settlement with the CFTC, which had alleged the platform offered unregistered event-based derivatives without proper regulatory approval.

That settlement was tested in late 2024 when federal law enforcement officials raided the home of Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan as part of an investigation into whether the platform had continued serving U.S. users despite the agreement. CoinDesk confirmed at that time that U.S. residents were able to trade on the platform in violation of the settlement terms.

Investigations by U.S. prosecutors and the CFTC were subsequently dropped seven months later without charges filed following a change in presidential administration.

The company's U.S. rehabilitation officially began in December with the launch of a mobile app offering sports event betting using real money under CFTC oversight, marking a regulated re-entry into the American market.

Polymarket's marketing push comes on the heels of a Wall Street Journal investigation last month that alleged the platform had used paid influencers to promote simulated trades and winnings on social media without adequate sponsorship disclosures. In response to the WSJ reporting, Polymarket stated it was "committed to maintaining accurate, fair, and transparent markets."

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CoinDesk regarding its current marketing strategy and regulatory compliance measures.

Why this matters: Polymarket's aggressive U.S. marketing campaign signals the company's intent to operate as a regulated domestic player, but the influencer disclosure violations documented by the Wall Street Journal suggest regulatory scrutiny will likely remain intense as the platform attempts to rebuild credibility with American customers and policymakers.

Market Outlook

Polymarket's U.S. comeback faces headwinds despite regulatory clearance. The company's track record of serving U.S. customers in violation of prior settlement terms, combined with recent influencer disclosure violations, will likely prompt continued CFTC and DOJ oversight. Success depends on demonstrating sustained compliance over 12-18 months rather than marketing volume alone.
